Thompson and Neal take top honours

Russell Thompson and Jacob Neal take top award at Saturdays Mini Rally Challenge Awards Evening.

Despite only meeting for the first time in January 2023 Jacob and Russell have made a stunning impression in their first season of the R50 class in the Mini Rally Challenge.

Nearly taking the triple crown and ending the season with 1st overall, 1st gravel and 2nd in the tarmac championship, despite some challenges throughout the year the partnership has proven a successful one.
Humbled by the attention the pair are planning to upgrade the car this winter and be out competing in the Mini Rally Challenge R53 class in 2024.

A bit about the crew

Jacob Neal, at only 26 Jacob is in the younger cohort of competitors and had a very unsuccessful start to his rally career, he competed in the 2021 and 2022 season of the BTRDA championship in a Corsa B, giving his all, and with a number of co-drivers, the car turned out to be a very unreliable and ended the 2022 season with only one finish. This was before a change of direction and before teaming up with lifelong club member Russell Thompson who has guided him to the dizzy heights of taking top step on the R50 Mini Rally Challenge.

Russell Thompson, unfortunately for Russell he was born into a Rally Family and has been out on events from 6 months old, at 12 he was co-driving dad on Targa rallies and 12 car events with some limited success (dad’s fault obviously). At only 15 when he first met Jacob in person the pair have clicked and the first round of the Mini Rally Challenge and Russell’s first multi venue was shortly after his 16th birthday. Russell was quoted as saying “this is a fantastic achievement and I’m looking forward to the new challenges ahead in 2024”. Expect this guy to be featuring in future result tables.
